Industrial Gates

Tata Ronkholz

The year 1977 marked a turning point for Tata Ronkholz, who had previously worked as a freelance product designer. She met Bernd Becher through her husband Coco and took up photography seriously.

That year, she took numerous photographs of industrial gates, which she deliberately made in winter so as not to disturb the austerity of the gates with traces of vegetation. She listed the important information about the motifs, such as the company name of the gate, location and date, chronologically in an archive book. The first industrial doors were created in Rotterdam, after which she found her door motifs in Cologne and the surrounding area.

In 1978, Tata Ronkholz began her studies at the State Academy in Düsseldorf in the class of Bernd and Hilla Becher.
